Disease Area
Influenza is a highly infectious viral illness, which usually occurs in the autumn and winter months and can cause community outbreaks lasting for six to eight weeks. Influenza is characterised by a series of symptoms that can affect the entire body. People with influenza are likely to experience a combination of symptoms including cough, sore throat, runny nose and eyes, headache and usually high fever or chills, fatigue, aching muscles and joints, and breathing difficulties. Many people confuse influenza with a bad cold. Influenza has a sudden onset and symptoms can last for up to a week, keeping you in bed for a number of days. Recovery from influenza generally takes a few weeks. Many people use medications to reduce the symptoms of influenza like high fevers or coughs, but these symptom controllers do not attack the influenza virus itself, which continues to run its course. The preferred method of prevention is through vaccination, although anti-viral medicines can be used to both prevent and treat influenza.
